Sod or Seed

Sod

  • Rolling out the green carpet gives instant results.
  • Allows foot traffic much sooner than seed.
  • Best option for a complete lawn  replacement.

Differences

  • Sod provides more protection against erosion of the topsoil. With sod, the topsoil is leveled and then sod installed on top. In a seed installation there is less protection from the elements since there is only a straw blanket to offer protection.
  • We are able to source shade seed to help you make the best selection of seed for your project.

Seed

  • More choices when it comes the the type of grass you would like in your yard.
  • It is more cost effective to install seed in a direct square footage comparison.
  • Ideal for fixing pathy spots and the ability to use a seed species of seed to get the best results for the hard to reach places.

Repair or Replace?

A few factors go into deciding whether it is best to do targeted repairs, over seed, or a total lawn replacement. Water drainage, lawn condition, erosion, shade, diseases in the lawn itself to name a few. The inability to accurately assess and intervene with what is causing the ROOT issue can lead buying unnecessary chemicals, "specialty seeds", and patches of roll out seed. Let us help you get the best out of your lawn ASAP.

Durane's Difference

For this particular project we were called to repair a failure of an existing wall. There can be various reasons why a retaining wall fails. More often than not it is due to inadequate base. You can see how much additional base material is required.

Seamless repair

Here it may be hard to tell exactly where the old bed blends in with the rest of the lawn. Take a look at our gallery to see how this backyard area is transformed.

Water! Water! Water!

Regardless if you decide to use seed or sod in your next outdoor project water will be essential. A consistent watering schedule is necessary for the seed or sod to give you the best results. The amount can vary depending on the time of year and the drainage on your property. The ground should be soft but firm after watering.

Lawns (How it's done)

Prep

The prep work will greatly depend on the current state of the lawn (if there is currently one). Our main goal with this step is to give us a blank slate to work with.

Topsoil

Addition of quality topsoil is important. It helps the sod or seed establish a strong root system. Making sure that the topsoil is properly graded is also important since it can cause unwanted puddling in the yard.

Sod Install

In a sod install the edgesof the sod are staggered as to prevent any shifting and helps retain moisture. We trim the corners to provide a clean edge and roll over the sod to help press the sod into the topsoil. We also recommend getting started on the

Seed Install

In a seed install we use a seed spreader to ensure proper seed density. (yes, it is possible to apply too much seed). Too much seed can cause to over competition for resources causing poor growth.  In smaller repairs simply ensuring the seeds are properly covered with topsoil using a rake or small amounts of loose hay. In larger areas star blankets may be used, like seen above.
