Safety, functionality, and beauty are some of the reasons you may need a new retaining wall. The most important parts of a retaining wall are the parts we cannot see. The foundation that is established before the first block is put down will determine the longevity of the wall. In a similar way, we believe taking the time to prepare and communicate regarding your project is almost as important as the project itself.

Retaining Walls

Safety

  • Retaining walls can offer safety by holding back large amounts of dirt near pedestrian traffic.

  • A well constructed retaining wall provides peace of mind. Peace of mind that your investment will be a long lasting one and one that lives up to your standards!

  • Retaining walls can prevent dirt from sliding or eroding away other parts of your yard.

Functionality

  • Seating walls
  • Specialty blocks for fire places
  • Planter Boxes
  • Structural walls
  • By nature, retaining walls allow water to freely flow in between the blocks. This allows water pressure to be relieved gradually and avoid bulging out and eventual collapse.

Beauty

  • The styles of blocks available range from simple beautifully colored blocks into complex interlocking blocks to create a personalized outdoor space.

  • The versatile nature of retaining walls can also be used to color coordinate with other types of material. This other material could be an existing patio or wall. We are able to tie old and new walls/ patios together to create a seamless addition to your outdoor space.

Our Process

It's About the Base

The importance of a well establish base cannot be over estimated. It really is the difference between having to call for repairs after a year or two or years of hastle free hardscapes.

Durane's Difference

For this particular project we were called to repair a failure of an existing wall. There can be various reasons why a retaining wall fails. More often than not it is due to inadequate base. You can see how much additional base material is required.

Giving you back your outdoors

Retaining walls such as the one pictured here not only offers a clean look in it of itself. But it also increases the space in which you are able to add small plants or decorations. A great benefit to this style of wall is that water can freely flow through preventing any water issues in the future.

What material to use?

We will work with you to determine the best block or brick that best fits your needs. Not all blocks are created equal and we are determined to help you make the right choice.

Patios (How it's Done)

Excavation

Sub base raw soil all the way at the bottom, we want the sub base to be firm to provide support for the patio. Building a patio without assessing sub base could lead to unwanted settling.  In instances where the soil is clay heavy, we may need to be excavate deeper to prevent water saturation and freezing over the winter which will cause the patio to warp excessively over time.

Base

Even before we install any gravel base we use a compactor to compact the sub soil to further prevent settling. A minimum of 6” of quality base of  is installed using 3/4 inch stone, depending on existing conditions that may be increased to provide additional support. Or other measures taken to help with water management.

Install

Finally, a thin layer of sand is added to assist in fine leveling before the bricks are installed. Finally your choice of brick is installed.
